We’ve entered the AI era, and depending on who you are, you might feel excited, anxious, or just plain confused by it. For nonprofits, this is actually a really interesting moment to use AI to help build and strengthen the infrastructure of your organization.
Regardless of how you feel about it, the question was never really whether to use AI or not. It’s about knowing what you actually need it for and whether it can help move your organization forward in a meaningful way.
Think about all the ideas you have. All the things you’ve wanted to do but haven’t because you’re understaffed, underfunded, or just stretched too thin. Many of those things can realistically be tackled with AI, whether it’s something in-depth like analyzing data or something more straightforward like finally putting together that HR manual or employee handbook that’s been sitting on the to-do list forever. You just have to be clear about what you need and what you want to accomplish with it.
There was an article that made a really important point about using AI the same way we use Google search, and how unproductive and wasteful that actually is. If you just need to find information, a search engine does that just fine. Where AI becomes truly powerful for a nonprofit is when you’re using it to build something, analyze something, or go deep into data and ideas in a way that would otherwise take significantly more time and resources.
If you go into AI without a clear goal, you will get lost. You’ll start searching for one thing, end up in a completely different conversation, and before you know it, an hour has passed and nothing was accomplished. That’s the rabbit hole, and it’s very real.
So before your nonprofit or organization jumps into AI just because everyone else seems to be using it, stop and ask yourself: what do I actually need this for? What do I want to build, create, or move forward? Having a purpose and a goal going in will make all the difference between AI being a powerful tool for your organization and just another distraction.
